The key documents most export shipments need, and how a CHA helps you clear customs smoothly the first time.
Start with the essentials
Most export shipments need a commercial invoice, a packing list and your Importer-Exporter Code (IEC). These describe what you're shipping, its value and how it's packed — and they must match each other exactly.
Shipping bill and transport documents
The shipping bill is the customs declaration for exports, typically filed by your customs broker (CHA). Once goods are loaded, the carrier issues a bill of lading for sea freight or an air waybill for air freight.
Cargo-specific documents
Depending on your product and destination, you may also need a certificate of origin, insurance certificate, or product-specific licences and certificates. Requirements vary by country, so confirm them before you ship.
How a CHA helps
An experienced customs house agent checks your documents, classifies goods under the correct HS code, calculates duties and liaises with customs authorities — preventing the small errors that cause costly delays.
