Full container or shared container? How volume, cost, timelines and cargo type decide the better option for you.
What FCL and LCL mean
FCL (full container load) means your cargo has a container to itself. LCL (less-than-container load) means your goods share a container with other shippers' cargo and are consolidated and de-consolidated at freight stations.
When FCL makes sense
If your cargo fills most of a container, FCL is usually more cost-effective per unit. It also means less handling, lower risk of damage and faster transit, because the container moves directly from origin to destination.
When LCL makes sense
For smaller volumes, LCL lets you ship without paying for unused space. It's ideal for startups, sample orders and regular small replenishments — though consolidation can add a few days to transit.
How to decide
Compare the total landed cost, not just the freight rate — include origin and destination charges, handling and timelines. Your forwarder can quote both options side by side so you can choose with confidence.
