Practical ways exporters can cut freight spend without slowing shipments — from consolidation to smarter booking windows.
Plan and book early
Freight rates and space availability move with the season. Booking two to three weeks ahead — especially before festive and year-end peaks — gives you better rates and avoids last-minute premiums.
Share a simple monthly shipping forecast with your forwarder. Even a rough plan helps secure space and negotiate volume pricing.
Consolidate where you can
If you don't fill a full container, LCL (less-than-container load) consolidation lets you pay only for the space you use. Grouping smaller orders into fewer, larger shipments also reduces per-shipment documentation and handling charges.
Pack and declare accurately
Freight is charged on actual or volumetric weight — whichever is higher. Right-sized cartons and well-built pallets reduce chargeable weight, while accurate weights and dimensions on your documents avoid re-weighing fees and delays.
Choose the right mode for each order
Not every shipment needs air freight. Reserve air for urgent or high-value goods and move regular replenishment by sea. A mixed approach often delivers the best balance of cost and speed.
Work with one end-to-end partner
Using a single partner for freight, customs clearance and transport removes hand-off gaps, reduces duplicate charges and gives you one point of contact when plans change.
